Pride Festivals are known for their fun and frivolity, but we also need to address some serious concerns.
The LGBTQIA+ community suffer from serious health disparities compared to our non-Queer peers, particularly in terms of mental health and the consequences this has on our physical wellbeing: something that is magnified in regional areas particularly, and a major cause of concern when we see a continued lack of visibility of LGBTQIA+ people in sports, and the ongoing attack on transgender people and people with intersex variations within sports.
Over the past few years, the Albany Pride Festival have been delighted to welcome LGBTQIA+/inclusive sports teams from Perth down to the region, and to have events which aren’t just about partying, but about looking after ourselves too.
We have some ambitious plans for this area in our future Pride Festivals, and if this might be something you’re interested in helping us with, we’d love you to get in touch.
